Apprenticeships at Mitchells & Butlers
An apprenticeship is the chance to work within one of our 1700 business, whilst gaining nationally recognised qualifications at the same time. In hospitality, the best way to learn new skills is to gain practical experience. The apprenticeship means that when you learn a new skill at work, this contributes towards your qualification, and at the end of the 12 months (as long as you pass!) you will have an NVQ, technical certificate and Functional Skill certificates, which together form your apprenticeship.
Hospitality is great fun. You might not believe that work can be fun, but are there many workplaces where you can make somebody’s day every day, there is a buzzing atmosphere as standard, and you aren’t chained to a desk from 9–5? Sure it can be hard work too, but we offer great rewards!
There are also many benefits to choosing a hospitality apprenticeship. You will gain real experience and new skills, and being around a structured support network means there are always plenty of people around to give you valuable advice. By doing an apprenticeship, you are embarking on a structured career journey, and when you finish your 12 months you will have documentation to prove all your transferable skills!

That’s right, we operate 17 brands across 1700 locations in the UK, and some in Germany too. That means the opportunities for progression here really are endless. Whether you want to work in a family pub in Sunderland or an upmarket restaurant in central London, we have something for you.
There are some ‘must haves’ when applying for an apprenticeship at Mitchells & Butlers. You must be aged 16 to 23, with the right to work in the UK, no criminal convictions and not be in full time education or hold any qualification above a Level 3. For our Hospitality Management Development Apprenticeship, you must be 18-23 and have at least a D or above in GCSE Maths or English.
There’s also a lot that can help your application. We look for certain traits in all our employees – we want you to be hard working, with a good work ethic and the desire to learn. Our employees have to be self-motivated to work under pressure and time constraints, and of course a passion for food helps! But remember, we don’t expect you to have any relevant experience. We are looking for your personality and potential instead!
Our apprenticeships are available all year around, except the enhanced Level 2 in Professional Cookery Apprenticeship which has staggered application times throughout the year.

But that’s not all, we can also guarantee you a minimum of 30 hours paid work in business each week, and all of this is paid at hourly rates above the national minimum apprentice wage. All our apprenticeships are 12 months’ long.
You are guaranteed at least 30 hours paid work in your business every week. Of course in hospitality this will include some weekends, bank holidays and shift work, but we do offer flexible shift options.
At the end of your apprenticeship, not only will you receive your NVQ but also a technical certificate and a knowledge of employment rights and responsibilities. You will also take away transferable skills that will help you progress your career such as team-work, responsibility and initiative. Whilst we can’t guarantee you a job, we will consider your performance during the apprenticeship when it comes to an end. So far though, 100% of apprentices who have completed training have secured employment with Mitchells & Butlers!
