Apprenticeships at Mitchells & Butlers
An apprenticeship is the chance to work within one of our 1700 business, whilst gaining nationally recognised certification at the same time. In hospitality, the best way to learn new skills is to gain practical experience. The apprenticeship means that when you learn a new skill at work, this contributes towards your learning.
A hospitality apprenticeship allows you to grow your confidence whilst gaining valuable life skills to help you develop your future. Not only that, our apprentices tell us that one of the best things about their job is the fun atmosphere and buzz of working as part of a fast paced team. You’ll always have the opportunity to make someone’s day – but no two days or customers will ever be the same!
A Mitchells & Butlers apprenticeship is the opportunity to work for one of the largest operators of restaurants, pubs and bars in the UK. With over 1700 locations across the UK across 16 brands, there’s plenty of variety at all four corners of the country. Not only that, here at Mitchells & Butlers an apprenticeship is just the beginning. Hospitality is one of the few industries where you can very quickly progress from your apprenticeship into an position of management. Completing an apprenticeship will give you access to the further training needed to achieve this, and other apprenticeships funded by us. And at the end of the day – it’s all good fun!
There are some ‘must haves’ when applying for an apprenticeship at Mitchells & Butlers. You must be between school-leaving age and 24, with the right to work in the UK, no criminal convictions and not be in full time education or hold any qualification above a Level 3. For our Hospitality Management Development Apprenticeship, you must be 18-24 and have at least a D or above in GCSE Maths or English.
There’s also a lot that can help your application. We look for certain traits in all our employees – we want you to be hard working, with a positive outlook and the desire to learn. Our employees have to be self-motivated to work under pressure and time constraints, and of course a passion for hospitality helps! But remember, we don’t expect you to have any relevant experience. We are looking for your personality, passion and willingness to get stuck straight in!
Given the size of our company, opportunities are constantly changing with new jobs being added every week. This is except for the culinary apprenticeship – you can apply for this apprenticeship throughout the year, with cohorts intaking in September, October and November.

Typically, our apprenticeships will last 12 months. Our Hospitality Management Development Apprenticeship is a three-year programme, which aims to fast-track your development towards a target role of Assistant Manager or General Manager.
You are guaranteed at least 30 hours paid work in your business every week. Remember, in hospitality our businesses are open in line with customer demands - this means you will be working some weekends and bank holidays, although we do offer flexible shift options.
At the end of your apprenticeship, you will receive a certified apprenticeship standard. You will also take away transferable skills that will help you progress your career such as team-work, responsibility and initiative. Whilst we can’t guarantee you a job, we will consider your performance during the apprenticeship when it comes to an end. So far though, 100% of apprentices who have completed training have secured employment with Mitchells & Butlers!
